Hi,

I’m Daeja Fallas and I take photographs, both still and moving. I’d like to tell you a little bit about why I am a photographer and why I love this job… if you want to jump to the credentials they are at the bottom, but you’ll miss the good part!

Sitting on a plane too early one morning, I asked myself, WHY? Why am I a photographer ? What do I believe? So, I opened my notes app and wrote out exactly what came to mind, here it is unedited because this is who you’ll meet when we’re face to face…

I believe this world is so beautiful that it breaks my heart. It is beyond what my words can say so I create these images with a camera. The sense of childhood wonder comes flooding back to me when I make images. If I could paint the world a million shades of green pink yellow and blue, I would. If we existed in what I see we would live in photographs of light and color that moved across our faces and danced in our eyes as we regarded each other in awe.

I believe the losses and sadness and grief we face crack us wide open and the light within gets brighter. It shines out. It drips down like raindrops and hangs off eyelashes like rain clinging to a petal. It reflects and refracts and encircles us. Just as the sun hugs us with warmth and the rain cleans us, renews us. My eyes see things a little differently. I see colors and feel them. I wrap myself in the feelings of those colors and they paint my world. Slowly, quickly, all at once and sometimes one at a time.

I believe I do this because I was put here to tell this story. To share the beauty I see in humanity. To look beyond the gritty and see the flowers pushing through the cracks. To see the perfection in a fleeting bloom, a fleeting life, a fleeting world. I believe we all deserve beauty. We find and search it out in our own way at our own time.

Now that you’ve gotten this far, let me tell you the rest….

I LOVE what I do. I started doing it when I was 8 and haven’t really stopped, except for the time I wanted to be an Olympic Ice Skater ( I grew up in Hawaii, so yeah, no). Since then I have worked on productions both big and small working with crews of 50+ people or just myself and talent. My favorite part of this job is the energy on set when were all creating something we’ve talked about for weeks or months together! I am fluent in French after living there for 7 years and attending the Sorbonne where I got my degree in French Literature and Art History. After leaving France I moved to New York where I did ALL THE JOBS, from intern to working at MILK (RIP) on the night crew and moving on to digi tech then portfolio manage with Art Partner’s artists and finally, sitting in the chaos of a photo studio lobby a friend asked, what are you doing here? Since then I have worked for Nike, Verizon, Louis Vuitton, The New York Times, Samsung, Google, Calvin Klein, Vanity Fair, Free People, Christian Dior, Prada and others. It’s been a wild ride and I can’t wait to see whats next.
